When is it time to re-waterproof?

When water no longer beads up and rolls off the outer fabric of your rain jacket, shell jacket, or other functional outerwear with a membrane, it means the garment’s original waterproof treatment – the so-called DWR* – has been washed away.

A wet outer fabric reduces the garment’s breathability. This means that even if the membrane still keeps you dry, the garment may feel heavy, cold, and sometimes even damp on the inside.

By regularly washing and re-waterproofing your garments and equipment, you maintain their functionality and extend their lifespan.

*DWR stands for Durable Water Repellent – the factory-applied waterproof treatment on the outer fabric.
