Dress right this winter

Being outdoors should be fun, and that’s why it’s important to wear the right clothes. When it’s cold outside, it’s best to dress according to the layering principle. This helps you stay warm and allows you to easily regulate your body temperature by adding or removing layers. There are no magical garments that keep you warm on their own in really cold weather — you need to dress in layers, both on your upper body and lower body.

Layer 1: The Base Layer

The base layer is the clothing you wear closest to your body. These garments should be soft, stretchy, and tight-fitting. The base layer should absorb and transport moisture and excess heat away from your body to an outer layer that can absorb it. The base layer helps keep you dry and warm.

Layer 2: The Mid Layer

The mid layer is an insulating layer — the insulation comes from the air the material contains. A garment that traps more air provides better insulation than one that is compact. By switching the mid layer to a garment that is more or less airy, you can easily regulate your warmth.

Layer 3: The Outer Layer

The outer layer should protect your body from weather and wind and should therefore be water- and wind-resistant. The outer layer protects against external moisture and cold while helping retain the warmth of the insulating mid layer.

Dress warmly on your upper body

We recommend

Base Layer: Valencia Base layer or Havana.

Mid Layer: Brooklyn or Etna Zip Shirt.

Outer Layer: A jacket that blocks wind and moisture. Pair it with the Bormio Vest.

We sweat the most on our upper body during physical activity, which is why it’s extra important to remember the base layer so that sweat doesn’t leave you wet and cold. Our Valencia base layer is a perfect base layer for the upper body. Our new addition, Havana, is also an option, as it wicks away moisture and keeps you dry.

On top of the base layer, you should wear a sweater that insulates. The more air the sweater traps, the warmer you’ll stay. Our sweaters — Brooklyn Hoodie, Etna Zip Shirt, Sweatshirt Black, and Anna Zip Shirt — trap air and are perfect for cold days. In very cold weather, you may need to wear double insulating layers. Our Bormio Vest is perfect between the insulating layer and the jacket. It helps keep your core warm while allowing free movement in the shoulders and arms.

On top of the insulating layer, you need a garment that resists water and wind. In extremely cold weather, we recommend an additional outer layer on top, which you can remove once you’ve warmed up while riding.

We also recommend wearing a hat and scarf in cold weather to keep the warmth you generate. Here you’ll find our scarves, hats, and headbands.

Dress warmly on your lower body

We recommend

Base Layer: Under Breeches

Mid Layer: Teddy Winter Leggings or Fleece Winter Breeches. For competitions, we recommend Fleece Competition Leggings White.

Outer Layer: A windproof and preferably water-repellent garment.

Even if most people don’t sweat as much on their lower body as on their upper body, it’s still important to follow the layering principle here as well to create insulation by trapping air.

The base layer on the lower body should be soft, stretchy, and tight-fitting. We recommend using our Under Breeches closest to the skin. Both the material and the pants themselves are made in Italy.

On top of the base layer, you need something insulating. We recommend our Teddy Winter Leggings or Fleece Winter Breeches, designed in soft, airy material with a teddy or fleece inside that traps a lot of air and works as a great mid layer to keep you warm. On less cold, darker evenings, our Reflective Leggings are perfect for extra visibility in traffic. Please note that you should also use additional reflectors.

We recommend that the outer layer on the lower body be windproof and water-repellent.

We hope this guide helps you stay warm in the stable by dressing in layers, so you can fully enjoy this beautiful time of year.
